Want younger and healthier looking skin? Here are some tips to reduce signs of ageing skin

As we age, our skin also undergoes the ageing process and becomes less elastic and supple. This results in normal signs of ageing such as thinning, sagging, wrinkles, age spots, dryness and broken blood vessels.
Sun exposure, smoking, diet, stress and other lifestyle choices affect how our skin ages. We can actively change our lifestyle to minimise the effect of ageing on our skin.

Here are some ways to help make you look and feel younger and healthier:

  • Daily sun protection
Limit your sun exposure and wear a SPF30+ broad spectrum sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing when outdoors.
  • Quit smoking
Smoking cause premature ageing. It enhances wrinkling of the skin and accelerates sun exposure damage to the skin. See your GP to help quit smoking and contact quitline 13 78 48
  • Gentle skincare
Use neutral and ph-balance skin products to wash your skin to remove pollution, make-up, sweat and other irritants. Avoid using perfumes soaps, heavily chlorinated swimming pools and long hot showers which can irritate the skin and worsen dryness.
  • Use a facial moisturiser
Dry skin easily shows fine lines and wrinkles. Regularly moisturise your skin to keep it hydrated and soft.

There are also medical treatments available to treat the signs of ageing. Ensure you consult your medical practitioner to understand the risks and benefits of these treatments and decide what option is best suited for you.

  • Topical lotions
Prescription creams are available to help reduce fine lines and uneven skin discolouration.
  • Facial peels
Chemicals are used on the face to help remove the very top layer of the skin. This removes fine wrinkles and age spots and allows faster growth of younger looking skin.
  • Botox
Botulinum toxin is injected in areas such as the corners of the eye and in between the eyebrows where wrinkles are common. This stops the muscles under the area from contracting to produce wrinkles.
  • Fillers
Dermal fillers can be injected to smooth and tighten the skin in deep folds such as the bracket lines (corner of the nose to corner of the mouth).
  • Laser
Laser can be used to remove broken blood vessels and treat scars and other signs of ageing.
